Book Information and Summary
1. Bear has a story to tell works extremely well for first grade activities. I chose this book because it is on the ALA Notable Children's Book list. It engages readers through a unique story involving personification and a love for reading and writing. This book will help students enjoy reading and it shows that no matter who you are, you always have a story to tell.
Ideas for Writing:
1. Summary of Activity: These activities are great to help increase students' comprehension as well as motivation. The first activity involves students with writing a story to one of their friends. It allows students to be creative and think about all the wonderful stories they can tell to their friends. Students will love writing these stories and will love being able to share them with their friends.
2. Common Core Standards: 1.W.3 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.
3. Levels of Blooms Taxonomy Addressed: Understand and Evaluate are being addressed. Students are taking their understanding of the story and creating their own stories to share and be evaluated by their peers and friends.
Word Choice Activity:
1. Summary of Activity: In this activity students are finding adjectives that are used within the story. This is a great way for students to help build on their vocabulary as well as grammar skills. It also shows the importance of details to help describe an event or an object.
2. Common Core Standards: 1.RL.4 Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
3. Levels of Blooms Taxonomy Addressed: Evaluate and analyzing are both used is used because students are having to go through the book and evaluate the text. Students must also analyze the words in order to better understand the text.
Voice Activity:
1. Summary of Activity: In this activity, students are evaluating the voice and tone of the author in this story. Students will then be speaking with an adult to explain and express how they feel the tone of the author is in the story.
2. Common Core Standards: 1.RL.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
3. Levels of Blooms Taxonomy Addressed: Evaluate and understanding is used because students begin evaluating the tone of the author in the book. Students must then understand the tone so they are able to speak with and talk with an adult and begin having a meaningful conversation. In doing this, it will also help students better comprehend the story.
